Friday lunchtimes (if we are lucky) are occasionally spent at The Rusty Pig in Ottery St Mary where Robin Rea cooks up the freshest and tastiest splendours seen rarely in our locality. No menu and no real idea of what we are about to receive, we have polished off the best belly pork, pigeon and various other fowls that has been placed in front of us, always with much gusto and generally in silence as we fill our mouths…! As Robin’s wines are selected by CPW, we occasionally take a new bottle along for him to try.
Last week we took along a bottle of Lirac by Roger Sabon (Southern Rhône). Robert Parker loves this wine and for good reason. It’s a deep dark beautiful wine, elegant and rich with a savouriness that perfectly matched the pearl barley and melt-in-the-mouth succulent pork dish that appeared that day. Its black pepper nose and inky brambles on the palate made this the perfect food/wine combination. Just wonderful.
A real shame to have to go back to work, but replete with a wonderful lunch and a glass of great wine, we rose to the occasion and unbolted the shop door to let our customers in !
Under £20 this a certain winner for Christmas.
